Intel 710 Series Enterprie SSDs Launched

Intel SSDIntel has just introduced another batch of SSDs, this time new 710 series, which is targeted at servers and workstations with the extra durable Multi-Level Cell flash memory type MLC-HET.

Intel’s 710-series may be better known as “Lyndonville”–a more durable series of solid state drive built for heavy-duty work in servers, workstations and other mission-critical systems. The new family is a spiritual successor to the X25-E drives, although these used 34nm SLC flash modules.

According to previous information, MLC-HET (HET = High Endurance Technology) with 20% over-provisioning should be able to provide 65 times the amount of write cycles compared to regular 25nm MLC NAND. Otherwise, the specifications seems to be comparable with the 320-series consumer drives that were launched about six months ago.

According to the specifications, the Intel 710 series’ sequential read and write speeds are 270 and 210 Mb/s and random reads/writes at 4K are 35,000 and 3,300 IOPS, which is actually a bit slower than the consumer drives.

The units use the SATA II 3.0 Gbps interface and come in the 100GB, 200GB and 300GB capacities. They have been given an arbitrary MTBF value of two million hours, which isn’t remotely relevant considering the characteristics of an SSD. However, the more interesting endurance figures specify the numbers 500-1300 TB of written data depending on capacity and over-provisioning.

The new 710 series is available now for the prices ranging from about $700 for the 100GB drive, $1,500 for the 200GB drive to around $2,000 for the 300GB drive.

Also in the pipeline from Intel are the 720-series PCIe-based SSDs, which will ship with SLC NAND and considerably better overall specifications.
